School District Partners with Municipalities for STEM Contest

Volusia County Schools has partnered with the seven municipalities and multiple Volusia County departments for the second-annual STEM Solutions by Students contest. This is a Volusia County-wide contest where students submit solutions to municipal challenges using science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) processes.
The following municipalities submitted one or more questions with a corresponding award of $100 for each winner: DeLand, Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, Ponce Inlet, Port Orange and South Daytona. Volusia County Environmental Management, Volusia County IT and Volusia County Public Works have also contributed to the competition.
The contest deadline is September 22, 2017 at 5 p.m. Students must be enrolled in any Volusia County high school, and may enter as an individual or team – there may only be one entry per individual or team. Solutions must relate to an area of STEM, and should be creative, concrete and plausible. Awards will be announced on September 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Port Orange Amphitheater, 2001 City Center Circle, Port Orange.
“This is a great opportunity to involve our local students in helping solve some of the complex problems in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math,” said Port Orange city manager and contest creator Jake Johansson. “Volusia County will benefit from these young minds tackling some of our issues. We could not be happier supporting them and this program.”
Participants can submit their entries via email, mail or in-person to Amy Monahan, STEM Specialist, Volusia County Schools
