Heritage Middle Competes in Greenpower Goblin Cup

‚ÄčThe Heritage Middle School STEM Team, "The Screaming Eagles", worked hard this year to build a Greenpower Goblin Car.  The Goblin car is a go-kart sized, battery operated vehicle that is driven by students.  The frame came as a kit the students needed to put together along with the electrical components.  Students needed to design and build a body, keeping in mind aerodynamics, funding and supplies available.
Their hard work paid off as they traveled to Huntsville, Alabama in April to compete in the Greenpower Goblin Cup. This was the first year the team built and competed a Greenpower Goblin car.  Heritage Middle School was the only school from Florida to travel to the competition. There were 40 teams (primarily from the Hunstville area) competed in the 3 events that included, a slalom course, a drag race, and a circuit course. The Screaming Eagles placed 6th overall, 6th place in the slalom course, 9th place in the drag race and 4th place in the circuit race (only 0.4 seconds from 3rd place). The students also created a PowerPoint presentation as part of the competition; their presentation placed 12th.
The Screaming Eagles is an afterschool club that consists of eight students in 6th and 7th grades. The teacher mentors were Mrs. Maureen Mack from Heritage, Mr. Paul Dineen from Heritage, and Mr. James Maynard from Pine Ridge High School. The team is very excited and looking forward to possibly expanding the program next year with the help of Mr. Maynard from the Pine Ridge Manufacturing Academy.
