Volusia Schools to Celebrate Veterans Day


Volusia County Schools is celebrating Veterans Day and the tremendous sacrifice that veterans have made for our country. Throughout the week, schools have been and will continue to host assemblies, concerts and fundraisers to honor veterans. 
            Here is a list of several events that are happening around Volusia County: 

Atlantic High: Wednesday, November 8 – recognized staff members and provided information to students.  

Cypress Creek Elementary: Thursday, November 9 – Hosting a Jeans for Troops Fundraiser. Students can pay $1 for a dress-down (non-uniform) day, and faculty and staff pay $5 to dress in jeans. All donations will go to veterans who are returning home from serving our country. 

DeBary Elementary: Thursday, November 9 – Veterans Day Concert and reception at 9 a.m. Honored guests are veteran family members of students and their families. 

DeLand High: 
  • Friday, November 10 – Air Force ROTC will walk 22 laps to raise awareness for 22 United States veterans committing suicide each day. Cadets will be raising funds, with a portion of the proceeds being used to build toiletry bags for the homeless/homeless veterans in DeLand. 
  • Saturday, November 11 – Marching Bulldogs and Air Force ROTC will participate in the City of DeLand Veterans Day Parade. 
Deltona High: Wednesday, November 8 – Hosting the annual “Troops On Line,” from 7 – 7:30 a.m. JROTC students lined Howland Boulevard and Wolf Pack Run waving flags as community members ride by in the morning. 

Edgewater Public: Wednesday, November 8 – 4th and 5th Grade Veterans Day Program.  

Friendship Elementary – Held a Jeans for Troops fundraiser this week. All proceeds will go help combat G.I.s and those service members returning to the workforce. 

Horizon Elementary: Wednesday, November 29 – A ceremony will be held at 1:20 p.m. in the Media Center for Horizon Veteran families only. 
RJ Longstreet Elementary: Wednesday, November 8 – Jeans for Troops Day; FFEA collected $5 donations from employees and students who participated in Jeans for Troops Day. Participants were provided a Jeans for Troops sticker and dressed down in jeans. 

Mainland High: 
  • Monday, November 6 – MSgt Garthwaite took four kids to the Emory Bennett VA Nursing Home to help with bingo and snacks, and to provide $50 in gift cards. 
  • Tuesday November 7 – MSgt Garthwaite performed a color guard at the Spruce Creek Country Club for Lohman Funeral Homes. 
  • Wednesday, November 8 - During announcements, ROTC read a roll call of the faculty and staff who have served (or currently) serve in the military; AFJROTC presented goodie bags with certificates to all 12 Mainland teachers/staff that were veterans. 
  • Thursday, November 9 – AFJROTC will have a short flag pole ceremony to honor Veterans from 7:10 – 7:20 a.m.; Two color guard ceremonies will be performed at Pathways Elementary. 
  • Friday, November 10 – Color guard at Daytona State College at noon, and at the football game that night. 
  • Saturday, November 11 – Color guard at the Cackleberry in New Smyrna Beach for Rolling Thunder, a nonprofit organization that focuses on educating the public about prisoners of war. 
New Smyrna Beach Middle: Thursday, November 9 – hosting a panel of veterans who will share their experiences. Students will experience the discussion through their social studies classes. 

Pathways Elementary: Thursday, November 9 – family members who have served in the armed forces will be invited to join for two ceremonies. 

Pierson Elementary: Displaying student work throughout the week to celebrate Veterans Day 

River Springs Middle: Monday, November 13 – musical tribute at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. The event is open to the public. 

Spruce Creek Elementary: Saturday, November 11 – Singing Yankee Doodle Dandy, leading the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem at the Port Orange City Center at 10 a.m. 

Spruce Creek High: Tuesday, November 7 – An assembly was held to celebrate veterans. 

Sugar Mill Elementary: Thursday, November 9 – Veterans will be recognized and the school community will be invited to breakfast. 

University High: ROTC will attend a ceremony at John Knox Village by the lake, and then move to Majestic Oaks. ROTC has two color presentations at DeBary Elementary.
