The FCAT 2.0 Writing test measures the writing elements of focus, organization, support, and conventions, which are integral to the Sunshine State Standards. Students demonstrate their writing skills by producing, within 60 minutes, a written draft response to one of two randomly assigned prompts. Grade 4 students respond to a prompt which asks them to tell a story (narrative writing) or to explain (expository writing). Students in Grades 8 and 10 respond to a prompt which asks them to persuade (persuasive writing) or to explain (expository writing).
This assessment enables schools and districts to evaluate the overall effectiveness of their writing program and to monitor long-term progress. Because the writing prompts are changed each year, year-to-year comparisons may be misleading.
The most recent FCAT results can be viewed by clicking the links below. Scores reflect the average score for all curriculum groups including students in exceptional student programs, Limited English Proficient programs, and the general education program.
