    A Message from Nurse Valeri

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

With the weather finally turning colder, we are going to see a lot more colds and flu soon.  Here are a few things you can do to keep your family safe and healthy.

    1. The single most effective way to prevent illness is to wash hands thoroughly and often.  Using soap and warm water, wash hands for at least 20 seconds. The kids can sing their ABCs to know how long it should take.  Scrub the palms and back of the hands and in between the fingers. Clean up to the wrists.  Hands should be washed after coughing, sneezing, blowing nose, before and after eating, after handling animals and after using the bathroom or touching anything dirty.
    2. Get a flu shot.  Despite what some people say, it cannot give you the flu because it's made from a dead virus.  Each year about 38,000 people in the U.S. die from complications related to the flu.
    3. Please don't send your child to school if they have a fever.  Students should be fever free for 24 hours without the benefit of medication before returning to school.
    4. Make sure your children get plenty of sleep, most elementary kids need about 10 hours.
    5. Encourage your children to drink plenty of water and eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables every day.
    6. Keep the mosquito population down and prevent Zika by dumping any standing water you find.
    7. Change water in pet bowls and bird baths daily.

It's my pleasure to take care of your wonderful kids,

    Valeri Lavin RN- "Nurse Valeri"
