Hello! My name is Mrs. Railsback and I am the school counselor at Tomoka Elementary. I work with many students at Tomoka individually, in small groups and/or in their classrooms. To receive individual and/or group counseling here at Tomoka, a student can be referred by their parent, teacher, or school administrator. Students can also request to see me. Students are invited to meet with me to talk about things that impact their learning at school, such as friendships, study skills, and self-esteem. In my office, students can feel free to talk about what worries them and to ask questions.
I would like to be a resource for your child throughout the school year. My goal is to help your child be successful both academically and socially through scheduled one-on-one counseling, small group and classroom guidance opportunities.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to work with you to make your child's time at Tomoka GREAT!
VCSB's school counselors utilize the developmental guidance approach. This means school counselors identify age-appropriate skills that all students need to be successful in school and work. The guidance curriculum is correlated with the Next Generation Standards in health and social studies supporting student learning of many concepts taught in these classes.
Guidance Curriculum - teaches skills in effective communication, decision-making and problem-solving, understanding self and others, school success, career planning, and community involvement. Curriculum is taught through classroom guidance, small group activities and school-wide programs.
Academic Counseling - assist students with monitoring and managing their educational and career plans. Students learn how to access a variety of information regarding occupations, colleges, military, scholarships and financial aid, and personal health and wellness.
Mental Health Counseling - address the personal and social concerns of students which may affect academic achievement. Individual counseling, group counseling, family counseling, and crisis intervention help students cope with stress, manage anger, and deal with grief and loss. School counselors also consult and collaborate with faculty and staff, administrators, and parents in regards to absences, truancy and discipline problems
